Chapter Ten

By the time breakfast was served, it was practically lunchtime.

Well, an early eleven a.m. lunch, but still.

Todd had seemed thrilled when Joey had joined him in the kitchen and asked if there was anything he could do to help out. Joey had smiled shyly, and Todd had gratefully requested that Joey start peeling potatoes.

They were out of frozen hash browns, and with all the shit going on lately, Max wasn’t about to let anyone go to the store to buy them. Handmade it was.

Colten eventually showed up. He had both his son Joey with him, and Frankie.

He wheeled in a baby playpen. Joey had no idea how the man had managed to get that thing downstairs with both the kids in it, but he didn’t get the chance to ask as Colten took one look at Joey and came over for a hug.

Joey wasn’t in the mood to have the same conversation with Colten that he’d just had with Todd, but Colten seemed to get the vibe that Joey gave off.

He was there, and he was trying to participate, but he wasn’t up for being overly friendly at the moment. It seemed to be enough for both men that Joey had even showed up. Part of him couldn’t believe it, but at the same time, it was nice to just be there. To be part of the group without the pressure of being too involved too soon.

It would be perfect if Dean was here to see how well Joey was doing.

Peter and George showed up later, setting the table, getting the hot plates ready. Emery and Neal still weren’t allowed to hold sharp knives as far as Joey knew, but he was about ready to hand them the potato peeler because, God, his wrist was starting to ache. And that was just his good wrist. It was hard enough to peel potatoes with one arm in a cast. Todd had tried to take the peeler away when he saw the difficult time Joey had, but Joey refused. He wasn’t going to let a spud beat him.

Thankfully, Todd didn’t seem to care if Emery or Neal had knives, and he took care of that awkwardness by having them both help Joey with the potatoes while Teddy worked on pancakes and French toast, and Scott got to work making a fruit salad.

Anything else that was to be served, Neal and Sam took out of the fridge from the previous day’s leftovers. Mostly lunch items, but everyone seemed to know that after a run first thing in the morning, their alpha mates would be coming back starving.

The alphas started arriving about fifteen minutes after the food was ready. Greasy eggs and bacon with Todd’s signature hash browns and cheese. He was stupidly proud of the way that had turned out, and he was definitely looking forward to eating the French toast with real maple syrup.

He waited for Dean to show up.

And waited, and waited, his heart getting heavier and heavier.

Dean showed up last.
